Family Dynamics

When I began to delve into visual storytelling, my family members became the first characters in this ongoing series. As I composed these scenarios of my parents, siblings, and me—using part memory, part imagination, part family history—I found myself drawn to unanswered questions, and I discovered that the paintings themselves felt like answers. Over time, as I learned how these paintings resonated with people, I realized that they were not just about my family, but also about families in general, about a deeper, more universal meaning of Family that encompasses human interactions through history and on so many levels.

“Alexandra Tyng’s figurative paintings have always said more about her subjects than the physical characteristics she paints. . . . Her symbols are often the universal archetypes of  Jung seen through an intensely personal lens.”
